Hearts at Stake (accessed as an e-book through this link) is the first of a new series, The Drake Chronicles that tells the story of Solange Drake, the first female soon-to- be-vampire born in 900 years. Besides being the instrument of a prophesy that would see the elimination of the current vampire queen, she is just your every day teenager. Right?
Discussion questions:
- What makes this book different than any other teen vampire novel, if indeed, it is?
- It seems that everywhere you look, there is a new vampire themed novel for teens. Can you put your finger on the reason for the popularity of vampire novels? Just what is it about them that makes them a "must read" for so many teens?
the reason there is so many spins on teen vampire novles is because teens find the very dramctic and they like to connocet with mythialocical creater that are just likes use with supernatural powers and they have simlaer confils with fitting in.

ReplyDeleteCurrently it can be that authors are just capitalizing on the Twilight Saga, but seeing as how vampires have always held a certain amount of intrigue, those older reasons still apply. It's sensual, and because of their immortality, doubly appealing. Teen girls especially adore the idea of someone loving them, and only them, forever. Vampire novels let them vicariously experience that. The otherwordly aspect tends to add a different sort of conflict that can't be derived from an all human cast in a teen novel.
I wouldn't call them a must read personally, I've read too many disappointing ones to be that enthused.

I think that this vampire themed novel is run around the same theme as other vampire based books. They all seem to run around the Twilight Saga and the basis of falling in love with an immortal and being torn between immortality and the ways of human life. I don't think that it's much different from any other vampire novels, other than the plot, it consists of most of the same characteristics.
ReplyDeleteA large group of female readers find these vampire based novels a must-read because, well every typical teenage girl wants to hav that feeling of being loved forever as well as seeing a relationship as impossible but than in the end it being a perfect match. It's basically a romance novel put into the middle of a book of suspense and action.
In my opinion, this book was just like any other teen vampire themed novel. The main difference i noticed while reading was that the author used different characteristics of vampires than most other related vampire books.
ReplyDeleteTeenage girls enjoy these books because it leads them to think that they will have a happily ever after, leading to them having the love of their life always being there for them. This story also reminds girls that you dont have to be from the same background(ie. race, culture etc) as someone to fall in love with them. If vampires and humans can love as one, why can't people from different races and cultures?
The only difference about this vampire novel that I found was that it was more suppose to be around the idea of a human and a vampire bestfriend instead of mostly a human and vampire falling in love ( even though there was that). Also the idea of saving a vampire instead of a human. I can't honestly say though sense I haven't read many vampire novels.
ReplyDeleteI think so many teens like the vampire novels is because it fits as a different world not one were used to. I think it'd be more like a fantasy world. It would be such a different thing to involve vampires in your life and also very diffucult, we want what we cant have.

As I have not read any other teenage vampire books besides this one and Twilight (which I read out of curiosity and did not enjoy), I can not really say whether it different from the others. However, I could see that there were quite a few similarities between this and Twilight. I also noticed that the author attempted to use more characteristics of traditional vampires in her story. I think that the recent popularity of vampire books is largely due to the Twilight series. Other authors probably see the popularity and success of them and hope that they can attract similar attention to their own work. In my experience, the people who enjoyed the Twilight series absolutely adore it and become quite fixated on vampires. Unfortunately for them, there are only four books in the series. So, when they complete it, they are willing to read other books on the same subject matter to feed their newfound interest in vampires. However, I am unsure of what initially made the Twilight series and vampires so intriguing to teenage girls.
