Swim The Fly by Don Calame

Swim The Fly Matt Gratton and his friends Coop and Sean have an annual summer project. This year's goal is to see a "real live girl, naked". In addition, Matt has committed himself to "swim the fly" for the swim team in an attempt to impress Kelly, the new "hottie" on the school's swim team. This book has been described as a laugh-out loud story about love, friendship, humour and hormones. What can be said about "Swim the Fly", the only book in the White Pine Reads this year that doesn't deal with depressing issues? It is a fun, light-as air read. Discussion Questions:

  • Did this book work for you, did you find Matt a character that you could understand or did you find it too light and not believable at all? Fart jokes aside, that is!

  • I was not surprised to find out that the author has a long standing career as a movie screenwriter and felt that this book could make a fun summer movie with Michael Cera playing the part of Matt. Did this book leave you with the same impression?

  1. I could understand Matt's character pretty well. it was a great book and not very predictable. In a way i think everyone can relate to Matt. We all do stuff that we wouldn't normally do, but we still take the chance. Especially teenagers, we tend to do something because we believe another person would like it if we did it or perhaps because of wanting to fit in.

I do think this book would make a great movie because of all the different events that occur throughout. This novel could easily be a summer time comedy that many people could surprisingly relate to. (Maybe not the same way though!)

I never actually read a book and think it would make a good movie but now that it has been mentioned I think it would make for a good summer movie.I think it has a pretty good and pretty funny plot.Over all its fun.

  3. I found this book fairly juvenile. I agree that it was too light, but, despite this, I think it was fairly entertaining, if a bit unbelievable and far fetched. I didn't really relate to Matt or any of the characters, as I have not had any experiences that were similar to theirs, however, I found their antics amusing. If this book were to be made into a movie, I think it would be successful with somewhat younger demographic. However, I think Michael Cera might be slightly too old to play any of the characters.
